Ron Moore, writer and executive producer of Battlestar Galactica, wants to delve into the world of video games to extend the franchise to the gaming public. Taking the hit show to new levels is the next challenge for the intrepid producer.
"It's also a new medium and new technology for storytelling," Moore said, "which means there are a lot of things people haven't done yet and figured out yet."
Games are influencing how Hollywood makes shows, not the other way around these days. There is a legion of gamers now behind the cameras. "There's a lot of technical and stylistic impact that I'm aware of in my world," Moore said.
The details of the new worlds created in video games stimulate the creativity of the film and television medium. Kids spend hours with games rich in visual images and complex backstories, even new mythologies.
"It's been a bit of a surprise to people involved in studios and networks, the idea that people will soak up that type of detail and depth," Moore said. "The audience is willing to immerse themselves in these environments."
So far, no one has come up with the perfect video / TV show hybrid. With a television show, multiple seasons with 20 or more episodes each year means loads of backstory and plot evolution. Picking a point to depart and work the gaming story is tricky to make sure the game is fun.
"Is it about experiencing the first season, navigating from the mini-series up to
'Kobol's Last Gleaming?' Or is it doing something that's going off into uncharted territory but taking it further away from the reason you watch the show in the first place?"
Designing a show which can cross mediums while aimed at the gaming market is a new orientation for project developers like Moore. In fact, he is one of a select few who understands that potential. "If you set it up from the get-go to design it that way, I think that's a really rich and interesting place for the business to go."
Another area toward which Galactica may be heading is mobile phone games. Moore said the popularity of Galactica episode downloads on iTunes has opened a lot of eyes on the corporate level. "They come to us once they've made the partnerships and then ask about back-stories or art," he said. "Creators of the show are pretty far down the food chain with these types of things."
Battlestar Galactica is filming its third season for an October 2006 premiere on The SCI FI Channel. Read more about the process for creating a video game from a hit show in the original Reuters story at
